Varkala – The pearl of Arabian Sea | BSR Travels

Beautiful and serene are the two words that best describe Varkala. If you are looking for a place to escape from the grinding stress of your life, then without a doubt, Varkala is the place to visit.
Varkala, situated on the shores of the Arabian Sea, is a beautiful and serene hamlet. It is 45 minutes away from Kollam, a southern district of Kerala, and over 40 kilometers from the capital city of Trivandrum. An interesting fact is that Varkala is the only town in Kerala with cliffs that offer an unforgettable view of the Arabian Sea. So remember to visit the Varkala Cliff!

1.     Papanasam Beach - While you are in Varkala, the most important activity you should do is take a dip in the holy waters of Papanasam Beach (also known as Varkala Beach). For centuries, people have believed that the water on the beach has medicinal properties that can cleanse the mind and body.

2.     The 2000-year-old Janardhana Swamy Temple (Janardhana is another name of Lord Vishnu) is believed to have been built by the devas. But the temple was ruined and was later reconstructed by a Pandya king. The traditional Kerala architecture with a dome made of copper sheets and beautifully carved Navagrahas on the wood is a true architectural marvel.

3.     The Sivagiri Mutt is an ashram built by Sree Narayana Guru – a religious reformer who propagated the ideology - "one caste, one religion, and one God". The Samadhi (the final resting place) of the Guru at the Mutt attracts thousands of devotees every year during the Sivagiri Pilgrimage days - 30th December to 1st January.

4.     The pristine Kappil Beach and backwaters, situated 7 km away from Varkala, is an ideal blend of the backwaters and sea. A relaxing boat ride in the waters here will relieve all the stress. A drive along the coastal road is also a delightful way to experience the view of the beach.

Varkala offers excellent accommodation for tourists and is also popular for health resorts that offer Ayurvedic Massage. Taking the beachside road to visit Trivandrum is a must-do long drive, and when you reach Trivandrum, remember to visit the breathtakingly beautiful Mangroove forest which is only 35 kilometers from Trivandrum!
